The Scouts - who we are and what we do

You might think you know about Scouting, but much has changed over the years. If you want to learn more, read on.

Scout Troop – for who?

The Scout Troop is currently for young people aged 10½ and 14/15 yrs.  Many will have been Beaver Scouts or Cub Scouts, but the Troop is open to girls, so we do attract ex-Brownie Guides, and some young people who are completely new to Scouting.

The Troop is managed by a team of volunteer leaders who have a commitment to work to the national standards and principles of The Scout Association.  (If you are interested in helping with the troop in some capacity we will be delighted to explore some of the options with you.)

1st New Southgate (Our Lady of Lourdes) Brownies
Written by Karen Landi
Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:48

We are fortunate in our Parish to have a full and flourishing Brownie Pack. We currently have 32 Brownies aged between 7 – 10 years of age and we have just as many on the waiting list, waiting patiently to become members. Our waiting list is currently closed to new members, but will reopen as soon as we have some space!

We meet once a week on Thursday evenings, from 6-7:30pm during Term Time. We aim to promote helping others, playing, learning new skills, friendship, badge work and holidays into our programme, plus days out and taking part in District events, such as sports days and swimming galas.

The Pack is currently run by me, Karen Landi, Frances Kantorowicz and Anna Scognamiglio, who is working towards her qualification to become a Brownie Guider. We are always on the look out for more adult helpers, so if you feel that this is something you would like to try, please contact the Parish office.

Saturday Club - for people with learning difficulties
Written by Edoardo Albert
Tuesday, 25 September 2007 20:41

This is a group for people with learning disabilities and their families, friends and carers. We meet once a month in the Parish, but don’t think that’s the limit of our activities. In fact, we form a network with the neighbouring parishes of Enfield, Edmonton, Whetstone and Palmers Green, providing support and encouragement for those with special needs in the area. At our meetings you’ll find arts, crafts, flower arranging, games, music, playing cards and board games, not to mention laughter, friendship and fellowship. It’s an opportunity for people to meet others in similar circumstances, to make friends and to share information. It’s all free, so please come along.

Volunteer helpers are also always welcome: please contact Libby Biberian on the phone number listed.

The Saturday Clubs for people with learning difficulties are managed in partnership with Parishes and St Joseph's Pastoral Centre with the support of volunteers in the Parish.

When: 3pm-5pm one Saturday a month.

Where: Parish Hall.

Contact: LIBBY BIBERIAN 07960 226421.

Bridge ClubWe meet on Thursday evenings at 7pm in the Small Hall of the Parish Centre. The club is open to any bridge players, expert or beginner, although we don’t teach the basic rules of the game to absolute beginners. However, if you know how to play a hand you’ll be very welcome to join us, whatever your level of experience. The cost is £2 per session, which goes to Parish funds, and we have 20 members, of whom you can expect to see 8-10 at any one session. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served. We’re a friendly, easygoing club, but one with an emphasis on playing the game.

When: 7pm Thursday.

Where: Small Hall.

Bernadette Club
Written by Edoardo Albert
Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:50

The Bernadette Club is a regular get together for the members of the Parish, held in the Parish Hall. It’s open to everyone, but is particularly suitable for older parishioners. It offers a chance to get out, to meet people and to play cards, quizzes, board game and, of course, bingo (no rude guesses as to the identity of the ‘two fat ladies’ please!). If your luck is in with the bingo, then flatter Lady Luck further with a flutter in the raffle. Refreshments are served and if you need help in getting here it can be provided. Not only that, we have a couple of outings each year in the spring and the summer. It changes, but recently we went for a day of lunch, tea and music hall, and a boat trip down the river to see some beautiful gardens.

There are over 60 members of the Bernadette Club and normally 30-40 present at each meeting. It costs a measly £1 per person and we look forward to seeing you.

When: 2pm-4pm on the first Friday of the month.

Where: Parish Hall.

Contact: the parish office or simply turn up.
