FR DAVID WRITES
Happy Pentecost Sunday! Today is the solemnity of Pentecost, also known as Whit Sunday, when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles. This promised gift of the Lord brought life, energy and dynamism to the Church which has continued throughout the centuries; it enabled the apostles and their successors to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Today we celebrate the birth of the Church in time and history, and celebrate the unity of our faith which gathers diverse peoples, tongues and traditions into the one family of the Risen Lord. Today marks the end of Eastertime and the beginning of the liturgical journey into the summer. May God bless us all on this great day, and the may the Holy Spirit inspire us all.

‘MAGNIFICA HUMANITAS’
On Monday, Pope Leo will publish his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas (On Magnificent Humanity). The first encyclical of a new pope is always a significant moment at the start of a new pontificate. The title deliberately echoes the letter of his namesake and predecessor Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum, which addressed the social upheavals of the Industrial Revolution. In a similar spirit, Leo XIV is expected to reflect on the ethical challenges posed by artificial intelligence today - including its impact on work, on relationships, truth, and warfare - while reaffirming the Church’s belief that every person is made in the image of God, with the dignity and freedom this brings. His encyclical promises to be a major contribution to Catholic social teaching on human dignity, compassion and solidarity in today’s world. Look out for it online.
