REFLECTION
Paul proves, time and time again, by his sacrifices, that he trusts in the Lord and has faith in him. Faith does not give immunity from the dark side of life; just because we have faith does not mean that we will not suffer. Paul is suffering from his “thorn in the flesh”; many of us suffer from illness or from weaknesses that can prevent us from trusting. If Paul can surmount his problems, then we too have hope that we can face all that life throws our way and come out with a stronger faith. Faith does not guarantee an easy life; being true to our faith in God can be very difficult and seem unrewarding. Jesus was not accepted by His own community when He came to Nazareth and spoke in the synagogue. Jesus had a deep faith in God, his Father, this gave Him the strength and courage to continue His journey despite the rejection by His own people. Being a good person has its rewards, but it is being true to God and to yourself that counts; Faith must be based in love, nourished by hope and lived in the world. David Frank
