GRAND ORGAN FESTIVAL 2013

From April to November 2013,Westminster Cathedral presents a series of eight concerts on one of the world’s finest organs. The unique and inspiring atmosphere of this sacred space creates a magnificent setting for organ music, and the position of the great four manual instrument high above the West Door provides the listener with the most direct and comprehensive range of sound and colour of any cathedral organ in the country.

The Grand Organ of Westminster Cathedral is considered by many to be the greatest achievement of HenryWillis III, one of England’s finest organ builders. Since its inauguration in 1922 by Marcel Dupré (who was an influential figure in its design), the instrument has been heard in concerts played by many celebrated organists from around the world: Louis Vierne, Fernando Germani, Jeanne Demessieux, Pierre Cochereau, Jean Langlais, GeorgeThalben-Ball, Ralph Downes, Jean Guillou and Dame GillianWeir have all performed here to great acclaim.

The Grand Organ Festival offers the opportunity to hear some of the finest European artists playing a wide variety of music. A highlight in 2013 is the celebration of the 850th year of Notre Dame de Paris: Olivier Latry, one of the Titulaires des Grandes Orgues at Notre Dame, celebrates the history of that great cathedral with a programme of music by some of its organists over the years.

Performers & Programmes

Concerts in Westminster Cathedral’s Grand Organ Festival 2013 are given on Wednesdays, commencing at 7.30pm and last approximately 75 minutes.
